My UFO Sighting

This sighting occurred on a summer evening, just before dark in the early 70s. I was in my early/mid teens, and we lived in rural Greene Co, between Xenia and Beavercreek, Ohio. At the time the area was all farm land with just a smattering of old farm houses, including our home. My younger brother and I were in our back yard when I noticed a USAF C-119 transport approaching Wright-Patterson AFB (10 miles away) from the east. (I assume the aircraft was one from Clinton County AFB near Wilmington, Oh where an Air Force Reserve C-119 unit was based at the time. C-119s were very common sights in the area as a result.) The aircraft was probably at 2000-3000 ft, flying at around 150 mph.

As I watched I saw a brilliant light, quite small and very well defined, streak into view from overhead (approximately 30 degrees from the vertical from a southwestwardly direction) heading directly towards the transport. For the next 15-20 seconds, the light darted around the C-119 at very high speed, performing sharp maneuvers flying above, below and around the aircraft. The light then sped off in the same direction from which it came, although climbing at a significantly shallower angle than it arrived. Within seconds it was out of sight. Total time the light was in sight was less than 30 seconds.

During the encounter, there was no sound other than the piston engines of the transport. The C-119 did not appear to take any evasive action, meaning either the crew didn’t see the light or made a conscious decision not to evade. The C-119 continued towards WPAFB, where I assume it landed.

I specifically remember watching the local news for the next few days, and reading the local newspapers to see if the incident was reported. It was not uncommon for UFOs to be reported on TV and in the newspapers of the day, but no mention of the light I witnessed was reported by local media..

Interesting! OK, from what you observed, Duke, what's your best guess on what that was?

I honestly have no idea what it was. I will tell you the first time I ever saw someone use a laser pointer to play with a cat, I was instantly reminded of the incident. It wasn't a laser I saw that night, however.

That’s a great description Duke.

I've seen orbs before in the sky. They claim they're satellites covering the planet. But funny some of them just disappear and some I've seen moved at quick speed. I thought there's 100,000's of space debris, how come we can't see the millions of light reflection from the sun rays in the NASA images?

How are you seeing these? Through a telescope ?

That's really cool, thanks for sharing your experience. It sounds like it was definitely a very special experience for you. All the UFOs I've seen just went in the same velocity, never changing it, as far as I could tell. It would be really cool to see one perform maneuvers that defy conventional aerodynamics. One thing I've read is that maybe they aren't relying on the physics of aerodynamics, which could explain why they're moving the way they appear to be. I don't think they're defying physics, because I think that's impossible. But I think they're using a more advanced understanding of physics that isn't public knowledge among civilians.

I've never seen a UFO, but I want to see one. I've got my video camera ready lol. There's been a lot of UFO sightings in my hometown. Lots of people have seen white orbs or tic tac things coming out of the Niagara River. They fly out of the water, fly around in the air for awhile, sometimes looking like they're chasing each other and playing around, then they fly away, sometimes back into the Niagara River. Pretty weird. I don't know if they're aliens or not. I'm not sure what else they could be besides some government's secret technology or some private corporation's, but people have been seeing UFOs since well before human aircraft existed.

Hi Phil, is the Niagara River up by the Falls?

On one of the alien shows on cable they featured UFOs painted in the background sky of Renaissance art. There may have been some Middle Ages artwork as well, don't remember clearly so don't quote me on it.

Good luck with your hunt.

And welcome aboard !

my theory is that the air force used drones decades before we were able to buy them in toy shops.

they would use them in many ways.

i was told by someone in the know that the military have technology so much advanced of what we know and can buy. like twenty years ahead.

for example we are talking about facial recognition but to the military this is laughbly old.

like in military operations if they lose technology they must try to destroy it. as they dont want enemies seeing the new technology.

movie makers have used drones for a long long time to film aerial shots and this would be decades after the technology is released to the public.

i think many ufos in say the sixties were drones used by the military on manouvers.

Drones have been around since WWI, the first one (Kettering Bug) was designed by Orville Wright. Until the 1960s, most drones were used either as aerial targets or as primitive cruise missiles. The first drone to be used for aerial surveillance (in SEA) was a specialized version of a target drone called the Firebee.

Drones would have been just one of any number of conventional air vehicles mistakenly misidentified as UFOs, but probably accounted for a minuscule number since they were few and far between until the late 1980s. Most drones over the years have been either automated conventional a/c or purpose built drones that are conventional in layout.

no i am in kent in england in canterbury.

I learned this from an elderly father of a guy high up in uk service. i wasnt told anything myself just that i would be amazed how far ahead they need to be in the services.

i think this is why we wonder about things in the sky.

just my two cents

The result of living just a few miles from the USAF Museum as a kid. I spent more time at the museum than I did doing anything else, except maybe playing baseball.

What positions? I pitched and played second and and short. Did a little stint at third base in my last year.

Asking the real questions:)

I have a little connection with Kettering Ohio. My best friend in college, still friends, played at IU and was Mr Football for the State of Ohio. My mom's neighbor went to Dayton.

I got Wright Brothers coming out of my head.:)
