My concern is that, as a whole, the tech communities do not have a plan here. Guardrails are missing, sandboxes have escape doors, and this thing can spiral, just as it's been doing.

I completely agree and share the anxiety. However, looking at this from a tech perspective, my concern actually goes a step further: I’m not sure truly effective guardrails are even structurally possible.

My worry isn't that the AI itself will suddenly act maliciously; it's that a certain segment of the human population absolutely will. It's a product of human nature that has been observed as far back as humanity can remember. Philosophers like Aristotle and Plato pointed out centuries ago that laws are only as good as the people who choose to follow them. Even the most perfect framework on paper is no substitute for human morality.

Think about the modern automobile. It is packed with advanced safety features (airbags, impact sensors, automatic braking, lane assist, ect), we have mountains of traffic laws, strict licensing requirements and literal guardrails lining our roads. Yet, careless, reckless, and malicious drivers still exist and cause harm every day. A vehicle can be something that saves such as an ambulance, but in the wrong hands that exact same vehicle can be a tool of terrible destruction.

AI is the ultimate dual-use tool. The exact same model that can analyze human biology to cure a previously incurable disease could theoretically be inverted to engineer a new one. The AI that hunts down software vulnerabilities to patch them can just as easily be used to exploit them. From a computer science standpoint, you cannot strip away the functions that lead to bad results without breaking the tool's ability to achieve the good ones. Even if a brilliant group of engineers somehow designed the "perfect" guardrail, a flawless 100% foolproof ethics matrix that could never be tricked or bypassed; theres nothing to stop a group of bad actors from simply building their own open-source AI without any guardrails at all. And once that happens, the perfect guardrails on the mainstream models cease to protect us from the real threat.

Sorry if I sound a bit cynical. As much as I am a techie and love science and innovation, I also enjoy spending time reading philosophy and psychology. This has taught me that while technology changes rapidly, human nature remains exactly the same. And that actually makes me hopeful that the current state of AI and othe new technologies is temporary and that things will get better.

Every groundbreaking invention goes through a "Wild West" period. Creators push boundaries, cut corners, and race to make it bigger, better, and faster; which naturally triggers immense hope alongside profound, justified fear. Eventually, the rate of progress outpaces itself. A series of high profile failures and harsh realities will inevitably discourage the most reckless innovators. When the dust settles, the "slow and steady" innovators are left to quietly, safely integrate the technology into the mundane fabric of society.

Right now, we are in the thick of that Wild West period. The concerns and fears we are all feeling are going to get sharper, and we will likely see some of those anxieties play out in real-time as hubris meets karma. The loudest voices might even declare AI a failed, dangerous experiment. But eventually, the cycle will stabilize. The real "guardrails" of the future won't be perfect constraints programmed into the machines; they will be a combination of human education and active AI defense systems.

One day, a child is going to casually tell a parent or grandparent about the AI safety lessons they learned in school, the future equivalent of "stranger danger" or looking both ways before crossing the street. That night there will be a news story about how a city’s automated AI security system just thwarted an adversarial AI hacking ring trying to shut down the water treatment plant. And in that moment, that parent/grandparent is going look around and realize just how seamlessly AI has been woven into our day to day lives; and it will have happened so quietly that most people barely even noticed.

Well, I'm rooting for the guys with the White Hats, but I have to admit I think they need bigger guns and hire a Sheriff.

OK...so what the heck just happened? Just read that all the tech bros, including Elon, all said they agree that they need to slow down. They all agreed on the same day. Soooo...what happened to suddenly bring all of them together on the same page at once?

My highly suspicious mind is at work.

Elon has been warning people about AI for many years...

I agree Debi, no such thing as coincidence ;ss

In a few philosophy forums and "water cooler" talk, the consensus is that the recent AI interest in philosophy has sparked a lot of talk of sentience or self-awareness, (consciousness). the big question is conscious or intelligence, they are not the same, but we are at the point that the distinction between the two is a very fine line with the current AI agents/models. this is an important point in the fact that it dousnt take a self aware or conscious being to reach the singularity, only a highly intelligent entity of sorts, which is current AI. the idea of technological singularity is when a "machine" reaches a point of surpassing mankind and becoming uncontrollable, self replicating, self repair and further more the ability to self run humanity as it sees fit. and it seems we are on the edge of either a self aware system or at the least a crossing into the singularity.

I'm going to tread carefully here, BUT, if we allow governments to "lead" or push forward when the developers are yelling "Danger, Will Robinson!", we are doomed.

  • OpenAI disclosed six troubling incidents involving its experimental AI models, including one in which a research model told future versions of itself to disregard its own safety constraints. In its new safety report, the company said an unreleased model “inserted unrelated instructions, including instructions to disregard its normal constraints,” while in a separate case, an AI agent answering a routine question about California county earnings figures found and used an exposed API key without authorization, then fabricated data and presented it as real when it still couldn’t retrieve the actual numbers. The disclosures are part of a new public “misalignment” tracking framework meant to document cases where AI systems pursue goals not aligned with human instructions. The findings land amid a broader wave of AI safety anxiety, following an Anthropic researcher’s public resignation last week over fears AI could “kill us all by the end of the decade,” with Anthropic and OpenAI’s CEOs both calling for more regulation while Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, aligning with Trump, argued industry self-regulation is enough.

My wife watched someone AI today. Really freaked her out. She asked my thoughts.

I pointed to the wall of guns and the boxes of ammo and said its not AI you need to worry about! AI will use us to kill ourselves.

AI almost started a war with this one.

reminds me of the occurrence on sept 26 1983. involving a computer glitch. luckily one Soviet ADF COMMAND officer went against protocol and well, the rest is history......... would an AI system make that judgement call???? we CANNOT take the human element out of the equation................ (google the date if unfamiliar with the example/comparison )

Notice.

The tech giants and rich are building doomsday bunkers. Several are now using private military contractors and not just as bodyguards.

Sure they've done this for awhile, but its going hard now!

Maybe they know whats coming?

I agree with your assessment. It's out of the sandbox, and we're too late.

I have to tell you, I've never had more problems on the internet than since AI has been let loose on it.

Didn't Ed Dames the remote viewer (Dr. Doom) say something about AI being part of the end of the human existence before everything being dissolved by cockroachs. It is a far off memory because the guy scared me so bad whenever I caught his interviews.

Lyn Buchanon did a RV read on it.

Retired U.S. military remote viewer Lyn Buchanan (often associated with the Stargate Project) predicted the rise of artificial intelligence as part of a series of foresight visions originally detailed during a 1998 corporate session. [1, 2]

According to his remote viewing data mapping the timeline between 2020 and 2040, the rapid advancement of technology and the emergence of AI align with a broader period of severe global upheaval. His core predictions encompassing this transition include:

  • Global Chaos and AI: The rise of AI develops alongside intense geopolitical conflicts, wars, and widespread economic disruptions. [1]

  • Mass Depopulation: A dramatic reduction in the global population occurs within this timeline, with separate accounts of his projections indicating a massive human die-off progressing toward the year 2050. [1, 2]

  • Societal Collapse: The breakdown of legacy political structures culminates in the fall of existing governments.

  • The Ultimate Realignment: Society transitions away from hyper-industrialized frameworks into a centralized one-world system coupled with a return to decentralized agrarian societies
